Most outages last a few hours. Some last days. Either way, the homes that handle it calmly are the ones that did a few small things before the storm, and know the handful of rules that matter once it’s dark.

The 60-second version
If you only read one thing
- Keep the fridge and freezer shut. Food stays safe about 4 hours in the fridge and up to 48 in a full freezer.
- Use flashlights, not candles.
- Generators go outside only, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.
- Unplug electronics so the power surge doesn’t damage them when it comes back.
- When in doubt about food, throw it out.

05 · FAQ
Quick answers.
How long does food last in the fridge without power?
About 4 hours if you keep the door closed. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours, a half-full one about 24. After that, check temperatures and throw out perishables that have been above 40°F for 2 hours or more.
Can I run a generator in my garage if the door is open?
No. Open doors and windows don’t stop carbon monoxide from building up. Run generators outside only, more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents, and keep CO detectors working inside.
Should I unplug everything?
Unplug sensitive electronics like TVs and computers so a surge doesn’t damage them when power returns. Leave one light switched on so you know when the power is back.
Is it safe to use candles?
Flashlights and battery lanterns are much safer. If you do use candles, never leave them unattended and keep them away from anything that can burn.
